Recycled Bird Bath

PASO ROBLES, CALIFORNIA

Mosaic murals at the Tobin James WineryI got a call from a woman who had just bought a house. In her new backyard was an old, slightly chipped and corroded cement birdbath. The bowl had a lacy, fluted edge while the base looked like it had been fashioned out of cement poured in shoeboxes stacked on top of each other. It's origin and history were a mystery, but she couldn't bare to throw it away so I was asked if I could give it a new look by covering it in tile. "Sure!", I said. The beauty of mosaics is it has no restrictions in terms of straight lines or flat planes, so I methodically covered all the undulations in tile, repairing the cracks as I proceeded, and was happy with the results. And the owner of the pretty but sad old birdbath now had a brand new, original work of art for her lovely home on the coast.
